On 27 April 2007, an agreement was signed in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia by major telecommunications-industry leaders spearheaded by 19 parties including AT&T Inc., Bayan, Bharti, BT Global Network Services, CAT Telecom, ETPI, FPT Telecom, the Government of Brunei Darussalam, PT Indosat, PLDT, Saigon Postel Corporation, StarHub, Telcotech, TELKOM Indonesia, Telstra, Telekom Malaysia, TNZL, Viettel, and VNPT to build the Asia-America Gateway (AAG) Cable System.
The AAG is a 20,000-km, high-bandwidth fiber optic submarine cable system that will connect Southeast Asia to the United States. It will provide connectivity between Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei Darussalam, Vietnam, Hong Kong SAR, Philippines, Guam, Hawaii and the US West Coast and seamless interconnection with other major cable systems connecting Europe, Australia, other parts of Asia and Africa and will utilize the field-proven Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) technology to provide upgradeable, future-proof transmission facilities for telecommunications traffic.
The birth of the AAG will revolutionize high bandwidth delivery between Asia and the USA. Designed for broadband traffic, it will provide much-needed diversity in traditional routes to the US and ensure alternate routes, expanded capacity and high levels of service during potential disasters. The AAG Cable System is expected to carry commercial traffic by second quarter of 2009.
